Title: Click + Drag
Client: Click + Drag, Inc.
Role: Creative Director
Birthed by the legendary Tuesday night Jackie 60, Click + Drag began as a Saturday-night weekly at the Mother nightclub in New York’s Meatpacking district.
Starting in 1996 the night ran four years in over 200 themed editions with a strictly enforced dress code.
Rob Roth, with cofounders Chi Chi Valenti, fashion designer Kitty Boots, and journalist Abby Ehmann explored the interface between nightclubs, future-fetish lifestyles, and computers. Using this innovative nightlife hybrid, Click + Drag continued to evolve and build a fanatic following.
When Mother closed in 2000, Click + Drag 2.0 was launched as a monthly edition at Chinatown\u2019s FUN, thriving until the events of 9/11/01. Seven years later in 2008, Click + Drag 3.0 emerged as an annual large-scale event at Santo’s Party House creating 3 epic productions until its last incarnation in 2010.
The list of artists who have performed throughout the years have included Genesis P. Orridge, Justin Vivian Bond, Basil Twist, Joshua Light Show, Kembra Pfahler, Debbie Harry, Antony Hegarty, Joey Arias, Julia Scher, Our Lady J, Mindless Self Indulgence, Narcissister, Kristeen Young, Jane County and Camille Paglia among many, many others.
With each installment Roth created photography, video projections, installations, decor, and performance, making Click + Drag a completely unique New York club experience and contributing to its place in nightlife history.
Roth has generated a body of memorable work ranging from the highly coveted flyers, video installations, including the infamous “bathroom cam” surveillance camera, to his own signature live body projections. Click + Drag’s many different incarnations are still looked upon as one of New York City’s most progressive and ‘ahead of its time’ events.
